Commentary on Programmes in Papua New Guinea

"Female condom getting popular," says health aid.
By MARTINA DARIUS

FEMALE condoms are becoming quite popular among those who were taught
the proper way of using them, says Janet Kilei, area facilitator at the Save The Children Poro Sapot Project drop-in centre in Port Moresby.  Ms Kilei said some male individuals said it (female condom) provides more lubricant than the male condom, while others claimed that it has increased their pleasure during sex.  However, many people are scared and put off because of the size of the female condom, Ms Kilei said.  "But when shown the correct way of using the female condom, it is mostly preferred over its male counterpart," she said.  Would-be users are taught how to use the contraceptive at the project drop-in centre.

As part of its drive to curb HIV/AIDS in the country, the centre has trained its workers to demonstrate the correct ways of using condoms at sites - usually in hotels and clubs - where they distribute condoms.  Over 1,000 female condoms and 20,000 male condoms are being distributed monthly in NCD by the centre, supplied by AusAID through the national HIV/AIDS Support Project (NHASP).
(See NHASP below) The centre also provides education and awareness to local sex workers and people who were taught the correct way to use condoms were urged to educate their peers and partners.

Women have been urged to use the female condom for their own protection from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI).  The female condom can be worn up to eight hours before sexual intercourse takes place. The drop-in centre offers counseling to HIV/AIDS positive, sex workers and homosexuals.
