In the November 1999 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine, the female condom is featured in a sidebar to an article about STDs entitled:

"How to Protect Your Sexual Health (Starting Tonight)."

The article, which runs on pages 240-245, speaks very frankly about how to protect yourself from STDs and the correct questions that should be asked of your doctor.

The relevant material about the female condom is included as follows:

Super Protection:

The Female Condom

The reality condom for women, a lubricated polyurethane sheath with a ring on each end that is inserted into the vagina, offers extra STD protection and even some pleasure-boosting bonuses. Here’s why:

  • It’s the only contraceptive that puts women in total control of STD protection (its failure rate is 5 percent, similar to the male condom).
  • Unlike the male condom, it can be inserted ahead of time.
  • Because it covers the lips of the vagina, it may be the single best way to protect against herpes and all types of HPV. These viruses can be spread by contact with parts of the male genitalia that aren’t totally covered by a male condom.
  • The rim can touch and tickle the clitoris during sex.
