Female Health Company and Hindustan Latex Sign Agreement
FC Female Condom closer to marketing in India

CHICAGO, September 03, 2003 – The Female Health Company (OTC Bulletin Board: FHCO) today announced that it signed an agreement with Hindustan Latex Limited (HLL) appointing HLL as FHC’s exclusive marketer and distributor in India. HLL is India’s largest male condom manufacturer and also manufactures and markets a wide range of hormonal and non hormonal contraceptives. The Female Health Company (FHC) and HLL signed a Memorandum of Understanding in November, 2001 which laid the foundation for a long-term relationship between the two Companies. Since that time HLL and FHC have received regulatory approval to import and market the FC Female Condom (FC) in India, have completed preliminary training sessions with various Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) to teach women how to use FC, and have completed acceptability studies related to its use.

With a population of one billion, greater than the entire population of Africa, the HIV/AIDS
epidemic in India could have a major impact on the overall spread of HIV both in the region and worldwide. It is currently estimated that approximately 4 million Indians are HIV positive, the second greatest number of persons, next to South Africa. Recently the Indian Government stated its commitment to rigorously address the pandemic noting that the initiation of aggressive prevention and treatment programs would be a national effort.

HLL, a Government of India undertaking was established in 1966 to make superior quality male condoms widely available in India. HLL has subsequently launched numerous brands of condoms and also manufactures oral contraceptive pills, intra-uterine devices, latex gloves, blood collection bags, hydrocephalus shunts and sutures.

HLL is the largest supplier of male condoms in India, catering to half of India’s annual male condom supply of around one billion. Headquartered in Trivandrum, Kerala State in South India, HLL has a strong manufacturing base and an extensive sales and marketing force throughout India for its products. Over the years, HLL has also established its presence in around 70 countries world wide.

The FC Female Condom is available in over 100 countries in various programs in both the private and public sectors. UNAIDS supported studies show that when FC is available as an option, there is a significant reduction in the incidence of sexually transmitted disease (STD) compared to when only the male condom is available. Additional published research highlights that incorporating FC into prevention programs can be cost saving as it reduces the number of unprotected sexual acts, the incidence of STDs, and the costs related to treatment and care.

FC is the only product controlled by women that helps to prevent STDs, including HIV/AIDS and unintended pregnancy. It is made of polyurethane, which is strong and unlikely to rip or tear during use and unlikely to cause allergic reactions. It is manufactured in a state of the art facility in London, England.
